A Boulder Chai Brew

The most delicious and quick way to brew a cup of chai is to bring 1.25 measuring cups of water to a boil in a covered pot or pan. If you wish to make additional cups of tea add 1.25 measuring cups water for each serving or “mug” or chai you want to make. Some water will evaporate, even with a lid.

This brewing method results in a full-bodied chai. This method allows for the essential oils and flavors of the spices and tea to be released. It is how we prefer to drink our chai, yet we encourage experimentation.

Find out what works best for you by making a cup or two and determining whether you enjoy a greater or lesser pungency of the essential oils that are activated, then decrease or increase the boiling time as needed.

1.

Place one teaspoon of chai mix into the pot or pan for each measure of water that you’ve added, once it begins to boil. Let the water and chai mixture continue to boil for 12 minutes.

2.

Turn off the heat and let the chai steep for another 12 minutes.

3.

Add Califia brand almond creamer, or another creamer as desired, and sweeten with honey.

4.

Strain your chai into mugs and enjoy.

5.

Share your creation with others and experiment further with alcoholic beverages or food recipes.

Traditional Pot Brewing Steps

This brewing method results in a medium-bodied chai. Allow the chai to become to become full-bodied by leaving it on the heating element, with the heating turned on, for an hour or more.

The traditional pot brewing method is a great way to get started with chai although it requires more time to complete.

1.

Place 12 teaspoons of your desired chai mix into a 12 cup pot.

2.

Pour water heated to the correct temperature for the chai mix chosen.

3.

Allow the chai steep for 20-40 minutes. Continued steeping time allows the release of essential oils from the spices. Experiment!

4.

Strain when serving,

5.

Add creamer and honey, and enjoy your creation.

Electric Drip Coffee Maker Brewing Steps

We recommend heating your water to the following temperatures when brewing your tea: Senchai (176 F.), Rooiverde (203 F.), Blancha’(175 F.), and Machaite’(203 F.). Most electric coffee makers are designed to heat to between 197.6 F. – 204.8 F.

1.

Place 12 teaspoons of chai in the bottom of 12 cup coffee pot or in infuser to be placed in the pot. The infuser must be as sparse as possible and not trap in the finely ground spices.

2.

Fill reservoir with water and start coffee maker.

3.

Allow the chai to steep for at least 15-30 minutes. Continued steeping will allow the release of essential oils from the spices resulting in a stronger brew.

4.

If chai has been made with mix in the bottom of the pot, strain upon serving.

5.

Add creamer and honey.

French Press Brewing Steps

Prior to using your French Press, we recommend rinsing it with hot water so that it warms up and maintains the optimal temperature for brewing.

1.

Place 2-1/2 tablespoons of your desired chai mix into a 6 cup French Press.

2.

Pour water heated to temperature determined by type of chai over the chai mix.

3.

Replace the plunger and allow the chai to begin to steep.

4.

Allow the chai to steep for at least 10 minutes. A longer steep will allow the release of essential oils of the spices. Slowly depress plunger.

5.

Remove plunger and add additional heated water. Will make 2+ pots.
